Akrotiri
Akrotiri,
a city that lay untouched since since 1450BC after being buried
by volcanic ash was excavated by Professor Marinatos in 1967.
The site on the southwest tip of the island has been found
to be in a very good state of preservation. Some houses are
two or three storeys high with their rooms and windows frames
intact. During the excavations amazing frescoes were found
all of which are now displayed at the National Archaeological
Museum in Athens. Organised tours and a public bus service
operate to this ancient site from Thira.
